Genesis 8

Summary –Noah and his family exited they ark after the flood waters were gone. The flood waters were on the earth a year & ten days.  They waited for the Lord God to dry up the flood waters. When the earth was dry, they departed from the ark. Noah built an altar and offered a burnt offering to the Lord.

 

Lessons to Guide Your Life:

Warning / Command / Promise – v.21 The Lord will never again curse the ground because of man;  v.22 (destroy all living)

Example: Noah offered what was pleasing to the Lord v.20-21

Main Truth – God protected Noah & family until the flood waters diminished from the earth.

Lesson / Principle –Noah and his family obeyed God and they were saved.

God’s Word & Who God Is:

Why in scripture – To see God’s righteous judgment & his power

Character of God – All knowing, all powerful, merciful, sustainer, protector.

Direction For Your Life:

Things to pray for – Help for an obedient heart and full dependence upon God.

Encouraging Thought – v.21 The Lord will never ever again smite or destroy every living thing.

Conclusion: God demands obedience because He is righteous. God judges for sin.

Questions/Thoughts to Ponder: 

Current situation – Pray the Lord will have mercy upon me & with hold consequences for my sin.

Action – How will I avoid sin?

Seek God’s word daily – have an unbreakable appointment with God.

Am I depending on God as my sustainer of life?

Answer to question – Hide God’s word in my heart.

Background of the Chapter:

Who – God, Noah, Noah’s wife, Noah’s sons, Noah’s son’s wives.

Where – On the face of the earth, mountains of ararat (Armenia)

When 150 days after flood water diminished, seventh month seventeenth day ark on mountain, tenth month. First month – waters continued to diminish, after 40 more days Noah opened the window, Noah 601 (First day of first month waters were drying, second month twenty seventh day land entirely dry.

Genesis 7

Genesis – 7

Summary –Noah and his family entered the ark. The flood waters came on the earth for 40 days & 40 nights. Everything was destroyed except for Noah & his family. The water was on the earth 150 days.

Lessons to Guide Your Life:

Warning / Command / Promise –God kept Noah and his family safe from the flood.

Example –Noah did all the Lord commanded v.5

Main Truth: The Lord God opened the flood gates of heaven & destroyed all living things but He protected a remnant.

Lesson / Principle –God’s word is true.

What He says / sets out to accomplish will be done. Disobedience leads to death.

God’s Word & Who God Is:

Why–To reveal God’s power in the past.

Character of God – Provider, Protector, Sovereign

Direction For Your Life:

Pray –I pray that I can find favor in the Lord’s sight. Lord keep me in your care.

Encouraging: The Lord keeps those who are His.

Conclusion: God’s will, will be accomplished.

Questions/Thoughts to Ponder: 

 Current Situation

Where am I not following God’s will/ His Lead?

I need to thank God for his protection.

I thank God for His power over all the earth.

Key:  Genesis 7:16

Those that entered, male & female of all flesh, entered as God had commanded him: and the Lord closed in behind him (shut him in).

Background of the Chapter:

Who – God, Noah, Noah’s wife, Shem, Ham, Japheth, and their wives.

What – They are entering the ark with every kind of animal.

Where – On the face of the earth.

When – Near the beginning of time. Noah was 600 years old.  The flood came during the seventeenth day of the second month.

Genesis 6

Genesis – 6

Summary – God told Noah how to prepare for the coming destruction because of the wickedness of man. Evil is on the earth. Sons of God are uniting with daughter of men. Every intent of man is evil. The Lord God is giving Noah commands for building the ark.

 

Lessons to Guide Your Life:

Warning / Command/ Promise/ Example –

v.18 God established covenant with Noah – Disobedience (wickedness, lost of direction) leads to destruction (grave consequences) .

Truth – The Lord God had to destroy creation due to the evil intentions of man.

Lesson / Principle– Wickedness will not strive on the earth

God’s Word & Who God Is:

Why – To reveal what happen to men in the past due to their evilness. To show God’s response to sin.

Character of God – Holy, demands obedience, just, controls all things, Judge, Ruler.

Direction For Your Life:

Prayer–Lord remove wickedness from my heart

Encouraging – Noah found favor in the Lord

Conclusion – Fellowship with God keeps us from evilness.

Questions/Thoughts to Ponder: 

Is there constant evil or disobedience in my life?

How am I going to rid my life of evil?

What are some of the consequences for my sin?

Noah walked with God. Am I walking with God?

Noah obeyed all as the Lord commanded. Am I obeying the Lord?

There has been habitual sin in my life. I will continue to hide God’s word in my heart daily that I might not sin against him. I am trying to walk with God by keeping an unbreakable appointment with him each morning.

Who – God, Noah, sons of God, Daughters of men. Noah’s sons (Shem, Ham, Japheth) and wives mentioned.

Genesis 5

Summary –God blessed several generations from Adam to Noah with fruitfulness.

 

What: From Adam to Noah; they are living, having children & dying.

 

 

Lessons to Guide Your Life:

Example: Be fruitful & multiply; Enoch walked with God.

Truth: God caused each generation to be fruitful.

Lesson / Principle: Man is created in the likeness of God v.5.1, God brings the increase

 

God’s Word & Who God Is:

Why – To reveal how God kept / blessed each generation from Adam to Noah (the one who would bring relief / comfort)

Character of God – Sovereign, all powerful, faithful, sustainer

 

Direction For Your Life:

Prayer –God please allow me to be fruitful. I want to walk with God. v.22

Encouraging: God is the sustainer of life from generation to generation.

Conclusion: God sustains my life and my family’s life.

Current situation – I do not have any children but I am a child in my family.

Questions/Thoughts to Ponder: 

-How am I trusting God to sustain my family?

-Are there times when I have not trusted in God?

-When have I tried to make my plan God’s?

Pray for God’s continual sustaining power. Trust God for his provisions and blessing of children and family. Walk with God.

Genesis 5:22

Enoch walked (in habitual fellowship) with God after the birth of Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters.

Genesis 5: 29

He named him Noah saying, this one shall bring me relief / comfort.

Who –God, Adam (male or female) generations of Adam to Noah.

When: Beginning of time

Genesis 4

Genesis 4

What: Adam and Eve had two sons. Cain and Abel made offerings for the Lord. God did not respect / accept Cain’s offering. Cain became angry & killed Abel. Cain receives consequences from God for his sin. Lamech, Cain’s family line, murders too.

Summary – Sin is affecting the lives of the first family.

Lessons to Guide Your Life:

Example – Sin affects your life and the lives of those around you.

Truth – Sin demands consequences

Lesson – Jealously (like Cain) breeds sin

Why – To reveal sin from the beginning. To reveal the affects of sin.

God’s Word & Who God Is:

Character of God: Sovereign, Just, gives consequences for sin, merciful (protected Cain from being killed)

Direction For Your Life:

Pray – Lord help me not to sin for it effects those around me.

Encouraging Thought:  God is merciful. He still blesses in the midst of sin.

Conclusion: Don’t allow jealousy in your heart. Anger by way of jealously can lead to murder / division of family.

Wanting / desiring what someone else has is jealousy / discontent. I need to be content where the Lord has me and rejoice with others.

Questions/Thoughts to Ponder: 

What am I jealous of?

Other marriages, other connected families.

How can I turn the negative feeling into good?

Focus on the Lord.

Genesis 4: 1

Genesis 4: 26b

At that time men began to call on the name of the Lord.

Who Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, the Lord, Cain’s wife, Enoch (Cain’s son), Jared (Enoch’s son), Mehujael (Jared’son), Methusael (Mehujael’s son) , Zamech (Methusael’s son) Adah and Zillah (Zamech’s wives) Jabal (Adah’s son with Zamech) Tubal – Cain (Zillah’s son with Zamech) Moamah (Tubal – Cain’s sister) Seth (Adam and Eve’s son) Enoch (Seth’s son)

Genesis 3

Genesis 3

What – The Serpent talks with Eve and convinces her to eat from tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eve also gave the fruit to her husband. God gave consequences to all.

 

Summary – Man made a choice opposite of God, they were given consequences, & sent out of the garden of Eden.

 

Lessons to Guide Your Life:

Example (Not to follow): Man followed the serpent’s advice even though they knew it was against God.

Truth – God expects his command to be followed & there are consequences for not following.

Lesson– Follow the Lord not someone / something leading you elsewhere (away from God)

God’s Word & Who God Is:

Why: To reveal how sin entered in the world.
Character of God: Holy, just, gives consequences for sin, caring (made clothes even after they sinned).

Direction For Your Life:

Prayer: Lord help me to resist temptation and obey.

Encouraging: God did not kill them right then even though they disobeyed His command!

 

Questions/Thoughts to Ponder: 

I have given into temptation and sinned against God.

I have been disobedient.

I haven’t been careful to obey the Lord’s commands.

 

-When have I listened to the influence of others & sinned?

-When have I caused others to sin?

-What are the consequences for my sin?

I have allowed others to lead me into tempting and sinful situations.

 

God still cares for us in the midst of our sin.

Genesis 3:21

For Adam also and for his wife the Lord God made long coats (tunics) of skin and clothed them.

Genesis 2

Summary:  God finished creation; History of Creation – God formed man, breathed into him the breath of life, planted a garden; Man tend/keep garden, named animals v. 1,4,15.

On the seventh day God created/stopped all His creation of plants, rivers, livestock/animals, Human.

Lessons to Guide Your Life:

Not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good & evil; man shall leave mother & father & cleave to wife – become one flesh v.17,29.

God created everything and made the earth pleasant for man (suitable for living)

Not good for man to be alone (woman/helpmate) v.18, given all food/trees but one v.16-17, Obedience was expected from the beginning

God’s Word & Who God Is:

God reveals the history of creation

God is All powerful v.2,3, all knowing v.16-17, (doing – no helpmate v.18), creator v. 1-8

Direction For Your Life:

Thank the Lord for providing what we needed in creation.

God said it was not good for man to be alone.

God provided man’s every need.

God blessed the seventh (Sabbath) day & made it holy. V.3

Questions/Thoughts to Ponder: 

Am I keeping the Sabbath day holy? Am I resting in the Lord?

God breathed into man the breath of life. V.7

I cannot live without the Lord.

Am I trying to live apart from God’s help & wisdom?

God gave His command and expected obedience.

Am I obeying the commands of God?

God gave man all his needed food v.9,16, water source v. 10-14, a helpmate v.20-23.

 

Genesis 2:24

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

They were right where God wanted them to be & felt no shame v.25

Why this passage is in Scripture:  To tell us about the beginning & how the world was created.

Who God Is:  God is Creator, all powerful, in total control, all mighty

Direction For Your Life:

Father,

I thank you for revealing to me how the world was created before I came to be. Thank you for being Creator of all things. Thank you for being God almighty.

I do not have to worry or fret because God has all power in his hands.

God is in total control. He did it. The beginning of time was started by Him. God was there even before the world was formed and fashioned. No one created God. God alone created all things.

 

Questions/Thoughts to Ponder: 

  • Have I doubted the power of God?
  • Where have I not given God the glory for His creation?
  • Am I being fruitful, multiplying or filling the earth?
  • Am I subduing the earth?
  • How am I demonstrating dominion over the animals?

 

I need to recognize God for who He is in all His power & majesty.

Father I thank you because all power in your hands.

 

Key Verse:  Gen 1:27

God. He created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him: male and female He created them.
