From Egypt to the land God promised them (Leviticus, Number, Deuteronomy, Joshua)

From Egypt to the land God promised them (Leviticus, Number, Deuteronomy, Joshua)

The Israelites crossed the Red Sea and went through the desert.  Moses led the people to a mountain called Mt. Sinai.  God gave Moses the 10 commandments here.  God gave them the 10 commandments so that they could learn what kind of nation God wanted them to be.  The law also showed them how sinful they were.  God gave them moral, ceremonial, and civil laws.  The Israelites began to follow God’s laws.  The Israelites were not to live like the other nations.  The Israelites were God’s chosen people, set apart for His special purpose.  The people knew exactly what was wrong and what was right.  Moses continued to lead the people and they came to a place name Kadesh Barnea.  They were close to the land God had promised them.  Moses sent 12 spies to spy into the land.  Ten spies came back and told Moses there were giants in the land and that there was no way they could go in and take over the land.  Two spies (Joshua and Caleb) came back and expressed confidence in God’s ability to help them defeat the Canaanites (the people who lived in the land God had promised them) who were living in the land.  The people refused to enter the land because they did not believe in the power of God to help then overtake the people who lived in the land.  God punished the people by making them live in the wilderness for 40 years because they did not trust in Him.  Moses died and the people entered the land with their new leader Joshua.  Joshua led them across the Jordan River.  They conquered and divided they land.  The Israelites did not completely get rid of the people in Canaan.  This brought about trouble later for the Israelites, because the Canaanites did not live by God’s laws.  The land was divided according to the 12 sons of Jacob (the 12 tribes of Israel).

Are you the Green Eye Monster?

Wanting or desiring what someone else has is jealousy or discontent.  What are you jealous of?  Other marriages, other connected families, etc.  Be careful not to allow jealousy into your heart. Anger by way of jealousy can lead to murder or the division of family.  You should focus on being content where the Lord has you and rejoice with others.

Sin affected the lives of the first family. In Genesis chapter four, Adam and Eve had two sons named Cain and Abel.  Cain and Abel made offerings for the Lord. God did not respect or accept Cain’s offering. Cain became angry and killed Abel. Cain received consequences from God for his sin. Lamech, in Cain’s family line, becomes a murderer too.

Sin affects your life and the lives of those around you.  Sin demands consequences.

Jealously, like Cain, breeds sin.  Genesis chapter four reveals how sin destroyed the lives of men even from the beginning. This chapter in the Bible reveals the effects of sin.

The grace of God is absolutely amazing.  God is sovereign, just, and merciful.   He protected Cain from being killed even though Cain sinned against Him.  Because God is holy, He has to give consequences for sin.   Man cannot comprehend a grace so encompassing.  God is merciful. He still blesses in the midst of sin.  God is good!  Wow, just think about the grace of God!

But know God is good!  Nothing or no one can compare to God!  In the midst of sin, God sent His only son, Jesus, to die on the cross in order to bear the punishment for the sin of men.  When faced with the temptation to sin (be jealous), ask yourself, “How can I turn these negative feelings into good?”  The answer is to:  Focus on the Lord.  Genesis 4: 26  At that time men began to call on the name of the Lord.

Prayer:

Father,

Lord help me not to sin for its effects those around me.  Help me not to be jealous of others and what they have.  AMEN!

God Grace?

What do you think of when you hear the word SIN?  Does that word bring fear or encouragement?  Sin can be defined as any action in word, thought, or deed that goes against the Word of God.  Sin is doing what God has said not to do and it is not doing what God has said to do.

Genesis chapter three reveals how sin entered the world.  The serpent talked with Eve and convinced her to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eve also gave the fruit to her husband and encouraged him to sin against God.  From this point, sin entered the world.

So here’s the bad news . . . The serpent was arrogant in his boast against God.  After being encouraged by the serpent, man and woman made a choice opposite of God.   Adam and Eve were sent out of the garden of Eden. God is holy, just, and He gives consequences for sin.  God gave consequences to all:  the serpent, man, and woman.  He gave consequences to the serpent because he encouraged God’s creation to disobey Him.  The woman was given consequences because she followed the leading of the serpent in being disobedient to God.  The man was given consequences because he disobeyed God in following his wife’s leading in eating the fruit from the tree.  What are the consequences for your sin?

Man followed the serpent even though they knew it was against God.  You do not want to be encourage by others to sin against God.  God expects his commands to be followed and there are consequences for not following.  Follow the Lord not someone / something leading upon elsewhere (away from God).  When have you listened to the influence of others and sinned?  When have you caused others to sin?

But here’s the good news . . . God still cares for us in the midst of our sin.  God cared for Adam and Eve because He made clothes for them even after they sinned.  Genesis 3:21  “For Adam also and for his wife the Lord God made long coats (tunics) of skin and clothed them.”    God could have but He did not kill Adam and Eve right after they sinned!  The grace of God is amazing!  He has the power to utterly destroy any who go against what He has said but His grace abounds.  You can be truly thankful for the grace of God.

Prayer:

Father,

I have given into temptation and sinned against You. I have allowed others to lead me into tempting and sinful situations. I have been disobedient to your word. I have not been careful to obey the Lord’s commands.  Lord help me to resist temptation and obey.  I am thankful for the grace of God.  Your grace carries me when I need your strength.  AMEN!

Life is God

Have you ever heard the phrase ‘Life is God”?  What does this phrase mean to you?  Does it mean life originates from God?  Does it mean the very substance of life comes from God?  Would life exist if there were no God?  How could life exist if there were no God?  These are some serious questions to ponder.

Life is God!  Life comes from God and God alone.  In Genesis chapter two, God finished creation.  God revealed the history of creation.  This chapter summarizes the events included in creation.  God formed man and breathed into him the breath of life.   Just think about the ‘breath of life.’  Breath is life and it came from God in the beginning of time.  God is the source of life, help, and strength.  Help from God is the source of ultimate strength.  Are you trying to live apart from God’s help and wisdom?  You cannot live without the Lord God.

On the seventh day God ceased or stopped all His creation.  God blessed the seventh (Sabbath) day and made it holy. The creation of plants, rivers, livestock/animals and man completed His work.  Man was told to tend and keep the garden.  Man was given the privilege by God to name animals.  God gave man one command which was not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.  God gave His command and expected obedience.  Obedience was expected from the beginning.  Are you obeying the commands of God?  Are you keeping the Sabbath day holy? Are you resting in the Lord?

God said it was not good for man to be alone.  The foundation for marriage was established in the beginning,  ‘man shall leave mother and father and cleave to wife – become one flesh.  “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.”  Genesis 2:24

God created everything and made the earth pleasant for man (suitable for living).   God provided man’s every need.  He provided man with a helpmate because it was not good for man to be alone (woman helpmate).  He gave all food/trees for food except for one.

God gave man all he needed:   food from the garden, water source, and a helpmate.  They were right where God wanted them to be and felt no shame.

Prayer:

Father,

You are all powerful and you demonstrated your power by creating everything that exists.  You are all knowing in that you brought life into existence from nothing.  You are the creator!  Thank the Lord for providing what we needed in creation.

God’s chosen family in Egypt (Exodus)

Posted on

God’s chosen family is in Egypt.  They continued to multiply.  A new leader came into power in Egypt.  He felt intimidated by the Hebrew people/Israelites, so he made them into slaves.  He also tried to reduce the number of Hebrews/Israelites by killing their male babies.  For 400 years they were in slavery under the Egyptian ruler.  God raised up a deliverer/leader for the Hebrews/Israelites named Moses.  Moses pleaded with the Pharaoh to let the Hebrews/Israelites leave Egypt.  Pharaoh would not let the people leave, so God sent 10 terrible plagues.  The last plague was the plague of death.  The firstborn child in each Egyptian family and the firstborn of their cattle was struck by death.  The angel of death passed over the houses of the Hebrews/Israelites because of the blood of the lamb on their door.  The lamb was their sacrifice/offering to God. (They were instructed by Moses to put lamb’s blood on their door.)    Pharaoh finally gave up and allowed the Hebrew people/Israelites to leave Egypt.  They left Egypt by crossing through the Red Sea.  Moses led then toward the land God had promised them.

The Power of God

Where have I not given God the glory for His creation?  In the beginning was God and He created the heavens and the earth.  In six days, God brought all things into existence.  Can you imagine a time when there was nothing but God?

It is hard to imagine a time of nothingness, but God created everything out of nothing.  The human mind cannot conceive the notion of making something from nothing because we are not God.  Only God could have the power to bring everything into existence.  Just think about the power of God!

The power of God is absolutely amazing!  God created everything by Himself.  He created the heavens and the earth and all else in six days.  The days of creation are as follows: 1. day and light 2.  heavens and sky 3.  trees, plants, fruits, land, seas 4. moon, sun, stars 5. birds, fish, sea creatures 6.  beast, livestock, and man in six days.  God saw that His creation was good and He approved it.

God is the Creator of all and He is in total control. The beginning of time started by Him. He did it! God was there even before the world was formed and fashioned. No one created God. God alone created all things.

Have I doubted the power of God?  Genesis explains how the beginning of time began.  Genesis chapter one was written to tell us about the beginning and how the world was created.  This is an awesome display of the power of Almighty God.  God is the Creator.  He is all powerful, in total control, and almighty.  We need to recognize God for who He is, in all His power & majesty.

Man was the crown of God’s creation.  He saved the best for last!   He created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him: male and female He created them.

What does Genesis chapter one mean for your life?  God commanded man to be fruitful, multiply, fill and subdue the earth.  God also told man to have dominion over the animals. So ask yourself, Am I being fruitful, multiplying or filling the earth?  Am I subduing the earth?  How am I demonstrating dominion over the animals?

Prayer response for Genesis 1:

Father,

I thank you for revealing to me how the world was created before I came to be. Thank you for being Creator of all things. Thank you for being God almighty.  I do not have to worry or fret because you have all power in your hands.  Father, I thank you because all power in your hands.  Amen!
